Gnarls, Kanye, White Stripes, Death Cab Win Early VMAs

thumbnail icon: Gnarls, Kanye, White Stripes, Death Cab Win Early VMAs

Big wins from artists you enjoy! Big, technical award wins. The 2008 VMAs air this Sunday night, with a more depressing list of performers (reportedly Britney, definitely the Jonas Brothers) and nominees (see: this) than ever. But good on MTV for handing out the pre-show honors to bands popular with The Internet: They get a little free advertising while not muddying the televised stream of Tokio Hotels and Miley Cyrusses (Best New Artists guys, vote now!) their core demo expects. (Actually I don't know who their core demo are, or whom they expect). So enough about that, let's get to the free advertising! Here are your tech awards winners:

  • Best Choreography: Mikey Rooney - Gnarls Barkley's "Run"
  • Best Cinematography: Wyatt Troll - The White Stripes' "Conquest"
  • Best Special Effects: SoMe and Jonas & François - Kanye West's "Good Life"
  • Best Editing: Aaron Stewart-Ahn and Jeff Buchanan - Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Possess Your Heart"

Lots of info on this year's VMAs right here.

Britney is opening (non-performance). Kanye is closing. Guess he's not mad at MTV anymore.

Can we do something about Tokio Hotel, please? Seriously, I've never seen/heard anything as completely terrible in my entire life, and they're all giant douchebags, from what I've seen in interviews. Can anything be done? They are really catching up with Insane Clown Posse for the Worst Anything Ever award.

As someone whose main career goal is to become a cinematographer, I feel like I've already seen the only award I really care about. Not that the VMAs mean much anyway, it's most just bands I don't listen to and songs I haven't heard. Although I'm totally watching at least part of it for my-totally-inappropriate-crush Russel Brand.

Oh no.....It's the Germans! I'm so glad that we are not the only country anymore who has to listen to such unbearable, ear-cancer-inflicting stuff. Seriously, I wouldn't blame any conspiracy theorist who said that Tokio Hotel is Germany's subtle attempt to start World War III :D

Lol...I find this whole Tokio hotel thing hilarious based on a past experience with the band. In early 2006 I traveled around Europe with a friend and for comic entertainment we watched a lot of Euro MTV. Although the success of all the artists was puzzling, One band in particular seemed completely rediculous. They were a German screamo band consisting of 4 prebubescent boys each with a distinct personal style that seemed to be copped from stereotypes of various stupid musical genres. "Ha ha," My friend and I laughed. "Europeans sure like some weird stuff. Good thing there's no market for music THIS bad in the US". Almost three years later I eat my words.

There's a foreign exchange student at my school from German and she says theyre ridiulous famous there...i really REALLY don't understand the appeal of them too. They are just...im not even sure if the lead singer + twin are boy or girl.

Tokio Hotel is a social experiment.
